Winter & Spring 2019

February
Pairing Photo with Poetry and Prose
Thursdays in February from 10AM to 12PM (February 7, 14, 21 and 28)
We’ve all heard the expression that a picture is worth a thousand words. Usually, we strive to take one photo that says it all. However, a little bit of text goes a long way to help us better understand, or even completely change, the way we view or feel about the photograph itself. In this four-week course, we’ll dive into the museum’s collection and library to explore photo techniques and the pairing of words with our photographs, from simple narrative descriptions to short prose and poetry. (Please note: No formal writing experience necessary).
In partnership with OASIS San Diego, hosted at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.

March
Introduction to Editing Digital Photos
Tuesdays in March from 1PM to 3PM (March 5, 12, 19, and 26)
Join us in March for a look at creative ways to edit your digital photographs. Whether you take them with a digital camera or a smartphone, we’ll explore tips and techniques, from simple editing to transforming the ordinary to the extraordinary. Each week we’ll take a look at modern photographic artists from MOPA’s collection and discuss how to use editing to better communicate an idea, message or mood through a photograph. Topics will include cropping, filters and effects, black and white versus color, and an overview of different ways to edit your digital photographs.

From sweeping panoramas to the simple form of a wildflower, there are many ways to photograph nature both big and small. Step into spring and join us for a four-week course as we use the museum’s collection and library to explore techniques to capture the natural world. Topics covered will include macro photography, composition, natural and artificial lighting, and high-speed photography. (Please note: no specialized equipment or prior experience necessary)

Fridays in April from 10AM to 12PM (April 5, 12, 19 and 26)
Join us in April for a very special four-week workshop series specifically designed for those with memory loss along with a family member, loved one or carepartner. Each week, participants are invited to explore a theme in photography inspired by images from MOPA’s collection. Throughout the week they apply those concepts to their own photographs and pair short reflections with each to capture participant’s life, memories and experiences.
