2022 Summer Camps

Learn about photography, video, animation and much more with creative professional artists at MOPA! Camps are great for all levels of experience and explore technology, image making and idea sharing!

Week-long, full-day camps for ages 9 to 16, offered from June 20 through August 12
Monday through Friday 9:00am – 3:00pm.

$295 MOPA members or Explorer Pass holders
$315 non-member

*10% sibling discount
*10% discount for military and first responder families – email camp@mopa.org for a partner code and thank you for your service!

*NOTE: Age categories are used as a guideline to direct parents to camps with appropriate learning approaches and content. All camps are designed for any skill level. We welcome you to register your children in whichever category you think is best!  Please email us at camp@mopa.org with questions!

Ages 9-12 (Entering grades 4-7)

Sensory Photography – WAITLIST
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Learn how to take pictures without looking, explore textures, capture the sounds and smells of Balboa Park, and become inspired by different foods. Each day we will focus on a different sense and create projects inspired by them!

 

July 11-15
Animation Studio: Stop Motion Animation – WAITLIST
Teaching Artist: Steven Topham
Create your own characters and animate stories in a series of fun and creative projects with local animator, Steven Topham! Bring your imagination to life!
*All equipment will be provided.

 

August 1-5
Photo Explorer – WAITLIST
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Campers will discover the hidden worlds of the Balboa Park and see the sights through the lens of a camera. Join us on an adventure that will lead us through Spanish Village, the Cactus Garden, Palm Canyon and much more!

Ages 12-16 (Entering grades 7-11)

June 27-July 1
Photo, Interrupted: Mixed Media
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Using inspiration from contemporary photographers whose work pushes the boundaries of traditional photography, this camp will encourage you to explore your creativity and rethink what photography can be. In this camp we will create unusual, odd, accidental, yet beautiful works of photographic art through a variety of experimental techniques.

 

July 18-22
Abstract Photography
Teaching Artist: Vanessa Alcaraz
Experiment through this unconventional approach to photography by focusing on patterns, forms, textures, light, and shadows. Explore artistic photographic processes like image transfers, projector photography, collage and more!

 

August 8-12
Photo Stories: Visual Storytelling
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Tell your stories through photography! In this camp you will learn about the history of photography and use a variety of techniques to show your real or imaginary stories. Get creative with us and learn to be a visual storyteller!
