2021 Summer Camps

Light Writing MOPA

Learn about photography, video, animation and much more with creative professional artists at MOPA! Camps are great for all levels of experience and explore technology, image making and idea sharing!

Half-day camps for grades 4 through 10* offered from June 21 through August 13
Monday through Friday 9:00am – 1:00pm

          $220 MOPA members or Explorer Pass holders
          $245 non-member
     10% sibling discount
     10% discount for military and first responder families – email camp@mopa.org for a partner code and thank you for your service!

A limited number of scholarships are available for families in need. Please submit an application!

*NOTE: Grade categories are used as a guideline to direct parents to camps with appropriate skill levels. We welcome you to register your children in whichever category you think is best!  Please email us at camp@mopa.org with questions!

COVID Safety Practices for Camps:
     Temperature checks at drop off

     Campers will keep the same equipment throughout the week

Photo Explorer – WAITLIST
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Campers will discover the hidden worlds of the Balboa Park and see the sights through the lens of a camera. Join us on an adventure that will lead us through spanish village, cactus garden, palm canyon and much more!
*Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with an SD memory card if they like!

July 12-16
Animation Studio
Teaching Artist: Steven Topham
Create your own characters and animate stories in a series of fun and creative projects with local animator, Steven Topham! Bring your imagination to life!
*All equipment will be provided.

August 2-6
How it Works: Alt Photography
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Experiment with making creative photos with and without cameras through creating projects like: sun prints, instax images, writing with light, forced perspective, and even make your own camera obscura!
*Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with an SD memory card if they like!

June 28-July 2
Aesthetic Selfies and Portraits
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Explore yourself(ie) through photography! Learn a little more about yourself and how you can express yourself in a photograph.What’s the difference between a selfie and a self portrait? In this camp we will improve our selfie techniques and create your own personal aesthetic.
*Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with an SD memory card if they like!

July 19-23
Create+Animate: Stop Motion Animation
Teaching Artist: Steven Topham
Create your own movie! Using tablets and their creativity, campers will work alongside local animator, Steven Topham, to create a stop-motion animated short from concept through creation. Got ideas? We’ve got the tools to bring them to life!
*All equipment will be provided.

August 9-13
Experimental Photography
Teaching Artist: Megan Swiertz
Create unique works of art inspired by the unusual processes of contemporary photographers. Campers will be altering the meaning of their photos through the use of paint, collage, and crafting.
 *Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with an SD memory card if they like!
