Historically, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities have been negatively stereotyped by commercial media, particularly when it comes to sexual health. This results in less people getting tested for STIs and HIV during a time when rates are rising dramatically. During COVID-19, San Diego sexual health clinics saw decreased STI and HIV testing numbers during shelter-in-place orders, but medical experts say positive cases of infection could exceed 2019 levels as pandemic restrictions are now lifted.
