Light and Time Workshop
Exploring Parallels Between Solar and Photography
The two basic ingredients of photography are light and time, and for much of history the light used to make a photograph came from the most common natural source we know: the sun. The process is similar to the reaction that occurs inside a solar cell, as UV light reacts to create a charge which is stored to be used as energy. To mark the equinox where the days begin to get longer, join us in this demo at MOPA where we'll step back in time and explore parallels between solar technology and the origins of photography, using basic chemistry, water, and the sun.
DATE: Saturday, April 6, 2019
TIME: 10 AM - 11:30 AM
COST: Free
PLACE: Museum of Photographic Arts
1649 El Prado San Diego, CA 92101
in Balboa Park across from the lily pond
ATTENDEES WILL:
- Learn about the sun's role in photography and explore parallels between solar panels and photosensitive materials
- Witness a photo-sensitive reaction occur in real-time. Create a one-of-a-kind photogram (cyanotype) image to keep during a hands-on portion of the workshop
- Learn from Sullivan Solar Power certified energy professionals on changes in solar policy, products and applications for 2019

Children who are provided with early education opportunities do better in school as they grow older, and are more likely to attend college and be successful in their careers. However, the lack of high quality, affordable childcare has emerged as a serious challenge for families throughout our region. The No Small Matter film will shed light on the importance of a child’s development before age five, and how the impact of learning at this age plays a role in shaping the citizens of tomorrow.
After the screening, we’ll be joined by a panel of local experts to discuss the importance of early childhood care, and the potential to benefit children and families in our region.
