The San Diego Italian Film Festival Presents: Comandante
Directed by Francesco Maisto | 72 minutes
Francesco Maisto, the director of this film’s father, was a supervising judge in Milan’s San Vittore prison during the Seventies, the years marked by political terrorism in Italy. Felice was a mechanic and has always called himself a Communist, an activist of the far-left movement LottaContinua. What is the link between two characters so distant and different?Humanity is the common thread of this intimate and personal documentary. Its deep meaning is the research carried by the young director: his need and urge to question himself incessantly about two key figures of his childhood, on the meaning of friendship, and the image a son has of his own father.
Attendees will also enjoy the screening of the film short Butterflies in Berlin (30 minutes) by Monica Manganelli. The short is one of the twenty finalists of our new Short Film Competition.

The San Diego Italian Film Festival Presents: Notti Magiche
Directed by Paolo Virzì | 125 minutes
The latest movie from Paolo Virzì is a sparkling comedy disguised as a murder mystery and bittersweet film industry satire set in the early 1990s, the tail end of Italian cinema’s golden age, when neorealism and commedia all’italiana gave way to a culture of excess, greed, and artistic stagnation. When a famous film producer is found dead in the Tiber river, suspicion falls on three young screenwriters who, when they are hauled in for questioning, recount their wild adventures navigating Rome’s declining film industry. Riveted with winking references to Italian cinema legends, with a melancholy eye on the past and an exhausted one on the present, Magical Nights is Virzì’s loving yet irreverent glance back to the so-called good old days.
Attendees will also enjoy a screening of Vale la Pena (15 minutes) by Lorenzo Marinelli. The short is one of the twenty finalists of our new Short Film Competition.

The San Diego Italian Film Festival Presents: A Casa Tutti Bene
Directed by Gabriele Muccino | 108 minutes
An unexpected storm strands a family, gathered together to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of two elderly parents, Pietro and Alba, on the small island of Ischia in Southern Italy. The numerous relatives are forced to live together under the same roof for two days and two nights with no way out. The lives of the siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews become ineluctably intertwined, lingering between a past which rehashes old and unforgotten disputes, a present which rekindles unresolved conflicts, and a future which appears to be uncertain for everyone. The island morphs into a labyrinth of passion and everyone must reckon with their own personal, sentimental, family, or professional circumstances.
Attendees will also enjoy a screening of the short film The Place of Happiness (15 minutes) by Aliosha Massine. The short is one of the twenty finalists of our new Short Film Competition.

The San Diego Italian Film Festival Presents: Selfie
Directed by Agostino Ferrente | 76 minutes
Several years after an unarmed teenager was shot by police in the Traiano neighborhood of Naples, filmmaker Agostino Ferrente traveled to the gang-ravaged neighborhood to make a documentary about the lives of its young people—for whom the prospect of being swept up in Camorra activity perpetually looms. The film’s central subjects are Alessandro and Pietro, 16-year-old best friends whom Ferrente recruited to film themselves using smartphones in “selfie” mode as they go about their daily lives. The result is at once lyrical and raw, a deceptively offhand, richly moving chronicle of adolescent friendship in a social microcosm shaped by economic precarity, conflicting moralities, and the improbable persistence of hope.
Attendees will also enjoy a screening of two short films: Shine (15 minutes) by Rhett Bradbury and Beauty (25 minutes) by Nicola Abbatangelo. These shorts are two of the twenty finalists of our new Short Film Competition.

The San Diego Italian Film Festival Presents: L'uomo che Comprò La Luna
Directed by Paolo Zucca | 103 minutes
A Sardinian fisherman has promised the moon to the woman he loves. And Sardinian men always keep their promises! Two government agents discover that an anonymous Sardinian resident has laid claim to Earth’s natural satellite. Immediately, word spreads through diplomatic channels in a series of grave phone calls. Deciding that this lunatic must be found, Italy tracks down a Special Forces agent named Kevin Pirelli who is secretly a Sardinian native, hiding behind a fake Milanese name and dyed blond hair. To complete his mission, he is trained to blend into society by Badore, a grizzled, hilariously deadpan taskmaster, who instills stereotypical provincial attitudes in the sweet, agreeable Pirelli, such as intense stubbornness and irascibility. Once on the island, a freshly bearded Pirelli finally discovers the moon-owner and the poignant reason behind his otherworldly investment, leading to a loony, fantastically visualized confrontation between government forces and the moon itself. In the end, Zucca’s film is more about riffing on stereotypes of his home island than on sci-fi, adding an emotional dimension to balance the slapstick silliness of this terrific comedy.
