The collection of photographs that Dr. Larry Friedman put together reflects an emotional and intimate approach. He collected work that resonated with him, that spoke to him in a profound way.
He was a fearless collector interested in contemporary work that challenged the notion of what photography can be. The images shown in Legacy: Larry Friedman Collection represent a range of processes like the artfully crafted Photoshop work of Dutch artist Ruud van Empel or the platinum/palladium imagery of Japanese artist Takeshi Shikama.
More about Larry Friedman
Dr. Lawrence S. Friedman was an extraordinary individual—a well-regarded doctor, advocate for human rights, patron of the arts, as well as a longtime trustee of the Museum of Photographic Arts.
An accomplished physician, he oversaw a comprehensive program for teenagers and young adults infected with HIV and provided preventive and primary care for HIV-positive patients. In addition, he co-founded a mobile van collaborative, which continues to provide free health care to unsheltered and runaway youth.
Legacy: Larry Friedman Collection is part of a generous gift to the permanent collection from the estate of Larry Friedman.
Additional financial support is provided by the City of San Diego and the County of San Diego.
