MOPA Camps

2019 Spring Camps

Spending Spring Break in San Diego?  We hope that your kids will join us for Spring Camps!  Daily camps will explore a variety of photographic skills and creative techniques.  Sign up by the day or join us for the full week! Camps are designed for kids ages 8-13.

Day Camps will be offered March 25-29 from 9 AM to 4 PM 

Cost:
$55/day for MOPA members and Explorer Pass holders
$60/day for non-members

10% discount for military and first responder families - email camp@mopa.org for a partner code!

Daily Camps:

Monday- Instant Images
We’ll explore visual storytelling through new apps to create unique photos, and learn how to make gifs, boomerangs and memes.

Tuesday- Photo Interrupted
What happens after you print an image? Campers will be altering the meaning of their photos through the use of paint, collage, and weaving techniques.

Wednesday- The Magic of Photography
Learn about the magic of photography to capture images that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Campers will learn about the magic of spirit photography, how to create a photo without a camera, and much, much more.

Thursday- Celebrating the Selfie
What's the difference between a selfie and a self portrait? In this camp we will improve our selfie techniques through the recreation of famous portraits.

Friday- Hidden Worlds
Campers will discover the hidden worlds in Balboa Park. Join us on a treasure hunt that will lead us through spanish village, cactus garden and much more!


2019 Summer Camps and Intensives

What are your kids doing this summer?  We hope they will join us to learn about photography, video, animation, and much more with creative professional artists – right here at MOPA!  Camps  are designed for kids ages 7 to 18, and explore a variety of topics like visual storytelling, animation, and movie making!  

Weekly camps from June 17 through August 16 are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM

Special early bird pricing through April 30:
$275 for members and Balboa Park Explorer Pass holders
$295 for all others

After May 1:
$295 for members and Balboa Park Explorer Pass holders
$315 for all others

*NOTE: Grade categories are used as a guideline to direct parents to camps with appropriate skill levels. We welcome you to register your children in whichever category you think is best!  Please email us at camp@mopa.org with questions!

3rd-5th Grade Camps

July 15-19
Animation Studio
Artist: Steven Topham
Campers will create their own characters and animate stories in a series of fun and creative projects with local animator, Steven Topham! Bring your imagination to life!
*All equipment will be provided.

July 29-Aug 2
Best of MOPA Camps
Artist: Megan Swiertz and Maria Mathioudakis, MOPA Staff
Summer is a SNAP at our Best of MOPA Camps camp! This packed week will include all of our coolest and most creative projects. Experiment with mini-movie-making, explore hidden worlds, and unleash your creativity through the lens!
*Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with manual controls and SD memory card if they like!

August 5-9
How it Works – Where Art and Science Collide!

Explore and experiment with making images using tech from early photography to present day including pinhole, photo transfer, cyanotype, and much more!
*All materials are provided!

6th-8th Grade Camps

Hidden Worlds

Create+Animate: Stop Motion Animation
Artist: Steven Topham
Create your own movie! Using professional equipment and their creativity, campers will work alongside local animator, Steven Topham, to create a stop-motion animated short from concept through creation. Got ideas? We’ve got the tools to bring them to life!
*All equipment will be provided.

August 12-16

8th-12th Grade Intensives

June 17-21
How to “Ruin” a Photo
Artist: Jessie McIntyre
Using inspiration from contemporary photographers whose work pushes the boundaries of traditional photography, this camp will encourage youth to explore their creativity and rethink what a good photo is. In this camp we will create unusual, odd, accidental, yet beautiful works of photographic art through a variety of experimental techniques sometimes thought to “ruin” photos.
*Cameras are provided, but we welcome campers to bring their own camera with SD memory card if they like!

July 22-26
Contemporary Photography / Studio
Artist: Megan Swiertz and Maria Mathioudakis, MOPA Staff
Explore MOPA’s Defining Place/Space exhibition and learn more about contemporary photography. Students will learn how to use studio lighting and learn about the different camera functions.
