Museum of Photographic Arts Creates Innovative Flexible Membership
MOPA Crew offers affordable month-to-month membership based on participants’ interests
SAN DIEGO – The Museum of Photographic Arts challenges members to rethink museum stereotypes and call the shots in the MOPA Crew, a new flexible monthly membership program launching May 27.
After evaluating industry trends and membership surveys, MOPA designed Crew to offer an alternative to traditional models and attract the upcoming museum enthusiast who wants an active, participatory role in membership.
“MOPA is excited to be leading the way on a new type of museum membership,” MOPA Executive Director Deborah Klochko said. “Crew gives people the opportunity to choose how they want to be a part of the museum.”
For $5 a month, museum members choose between the Photography Crew and Film Crew, or an All-Access Pass to both crews for $8. A distinguishing feature of this interest-based program is its month-to-month flexibility that eliminates the standard annual commitment.
The purpose of Crew is to provide a more inclusive atmosphere for MOPA’s audience with mission-driven experiences based on personalized interests. MOPA’s Director of Development Operations Selina Hudgins explained how museums must be nimble and adapt to stay relevant to younger audiences in the evolving philanthropic landscape.
“This hands-on, social audience expects more than the traditional museum membership,” Hudgins said. “They want to feel involved and know they’re contributing to their cultural community in San Diego.”
People may sign up for Crew at www.MOPA.org/Crew starting May 27. The traditional annual museum membership will continue to be available.
