Hopefully you’ve had a chance to watch this earlier post all about the Elements of Art, the starting point for any great photograph. Now that you’ve brushed up on those basics, let’s take them one step further and explore Principles of Design.
The Principles of Design are simply how the Elements of Art are used in a photograph. While sources vary on the exact number, the primary six are emphasis, balance, proportion, movement, rhythm and variety. They describe how the various elements come together to guide our focus, provide visual interest and engage us as the viewer. What do the principles look like in action? Check out the video below:
