Californian photographers showcased in “Boundless: A California Invitational”
MOPA’s triennial invitational features 11 artists in new exhibition and photo book
SAN DIEGO – The Museum of Photographic Arts opened its newest exhibition Boundless: A California Invitational, the third installment in its triennial invitational series.
Two dominant themes appear in Boundless: landscape and the narrative. The 11 Californian artists combine video and still imagery, redefine landscape photography and embrace a visual narrative.
“The work is boundless in its approach,” said MOPA Executive Director Deborah Klochko. “These artists are pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible in the medium of photography.”
The triennial invitational started in 2010 with a State of Mind followed by Staking Claim in 2013 and now Boundless. These exhibitions showcase the talent and diverse scope of artwork by photographers living within the museum’s home state of California. Similar to the previous shows, MOPA asked galleries, curators and other professionals in the photographic field to nominate up to three artists who produced meaningful work in the last five years.
“Throughout these three Invitational exhibitions, what has consistently emerged is that California photographic art need not be recognized as regional,” Klochko said. “It is leading a global dialogue on the redefinition of the medium.”
Accompanying the exhibition is a full-color photo book produced by MOPA with Toki Design and Artron Art Printing. The book is available in the MOPA Shop and online with limited autographed copies available.
Boundless will be on display at MOPA until Jan. 29, 2017, and is included with Pay What You Wish admission. The fourth installment of A California Invitational will occur in 2019. Learn more about current and upcoming exhibitions at MOPA.org/exhibitions.
