PHOTOGRAPHY PIONEERS CHANGE THE COURSE OF FINE ART HISTORY IN A TIME OF COUNTER-CULTURE
The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), presents Moment in Time: A Collection of Photographs/Works from the Bank of America Collection through September 23, 2018
Over 50 years ago, Beaumont and Nancy Newhall were hired by visionary Samuel Wm. Sax to assemble a stunning selection of works spanning the history of photography. Moment in Time: A Collection of Photographs/Works from the Bank of America Collection, presents iconic images from that collection by Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Robert Frank, Dorothea Lange, and many more.
In May of 1967, Samuel Wm. Sax, President of the Exchange National Bank of Chicago, discussed with Beaumont and Nancy Newhall the idea of establishing an art collection focused solely on photography. What the Newhalls created became the first collection of photography in the United States
This collection emerged at a particular moment in time—the late 1960s—when radical ideas appeared in almost every discipline. During this tumultuous and transitional period, the corporate environment was changing physically from formal settings into workspaces which allowed freedom of movement and interaction with customers, while the art world was redefining itself and its relationship to photography as a fine art.
Curated by Deborah Klochko, Executive Director & Chief Curator of the Museum of Photographic Arts, the exhibition is now part of the Bank of America Collection. It is organized through the bank’s Art in Our Communities® program which was established in 2009 in order to share the company’s art collection with the widest possible audience. Comprising the art collections of the predecessor banks that are now part of Bank of America, the program offers museums and nonprofit galleries the opportunity to borrow complete or customized exhibitions at no cost. The public is able to enjoy new art installations at its local museums, while the museums themselves are able to generate vital revenue. Since 2009, more than 130 exhibitions have been loaned through this one-of-a-kind program.
“The arts enrich our communities, celebrate the past and inspire our future,” said Rick Bregman San Diego market president for Bank of America. “We’re proud to partner with the Museum of Photographic Arts by lending pieces from our Bank of America Collection for the benefit of all visitors. By sharing these intriguing photographic works, we hope to foster great learning and inspiration.”
